Apr '16 Simphotek advances treatment of cacner using light-drug interactions

TechNews, Apr 2016 (NJ Tech Council) – Simphotek collaborates with leading cancer research institutions to address a critical unmet need: fast computing system for photodynamic therapy planning and monitoring. Read more (page 14)...

Jan '16 Simphotek accelerates PDT entry into the era of personalized medicine

New Jersey Tech Weekly, Jan 10, 2016 – What happens when you optimize a cancer treatment using software? A possible organ-sparing, life-saving alternative therapy to chemo and radiation becomes viable. That’s what the startup Simphotek is betting on. The company, which has been around for two years, is part of the Enterprise Development Center (EDC) incubator at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), in Newark. It needs money to further develop its software, said Simphotek President Mary Potasek when she pitched at the EDC Summit, held at NJIT in late October.

Cancer treatments can be hard to describe. With this one, called “Photodynamic Therapy,” a drug is injected into the patient. This isn’t a chemo drug, however. It simply activates chemical reactions in cancer cells when combined with the light from a laser. The combination of the laser light and the drug produces reactive ions that kill cancer cells. Potasek notes that this technique is well-known, but the problem is that it’s impossible to determine how much light to use or how long to use it on various tumors. Read more...

10 '15 Simphotek is raising money to join the fight against cancer

Trenton, N.J., Oct 29, 2015 (NJ EDA) – Optics software and hardware developer Simphotek is a small New Jersey business having a big impact on a wide range of industries, particularly in the creation of cancer therapies.

One example of SimphoSOFT®’s practical application is the company’s recent projects involving the use of computer optimization tools for light-drug based cancer therapy. Known as photodynamic therapy (PDT), this alternative or adjunct to chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery is in clinical studies throughout the world. Simphotek partners with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Roswell Park Cancer Institute, two of the world’s leading cancer centers. Simphotek is working with these hospitals to combine its optimization software with optical components to create a portable instrument that can be used by the physician in real time in the clinic or operating room. Simphotek believes that such an instrument is a critical missing piece that when developed, will enable PDT to grow as large as radiation therapy. Read more...

06 '15 Simphotek releases SimphoSOFT® 3.2 Update 5  —  Excitation Map

Excitation map feature has been added as a new input and output of the SimphoSOFT® simulation. Excitation map represents the excitation of the sample material immediately after the pulse passes through the sample interior. This feature is essential when working with laser cavities and setups with repetitive irradiation. Excitation map is characterized by:
  • can be used as initial condition for the next arriving beam,
  • arbitrary time period between two consecutive beams,
  • pump and seed can have different profiles,
  • can be stored to file system,
  • single and multi-beam are supported.

02 '15 SimphoSOFT® is integrated with LightTrans VirtualLab™

Simphotek (USA) is partnering with LightTrans (Germany) to offering a new set of tools which can significantly improve accuracy in simulation of passive and active devices, including but not limited to amplifiers, lasers, ring resonators, multi-photon microscopes, super-resolution microscopes. You can learn more about integration of Simphotek SimphoSOFT® modules into LightTrans VirtualLab™ optical modeling and design software here.
Meet our representative (Gene) at booth #4601-49 in the German Pavilion to explore in depth this new product and claim a DISCOUNT on SimphoSOFT software if it is purchased during exhibition.

09 '14 Simphotek awarded NIH/NCI SBIR Phase I

Simphotek, in collaboration with University of Pennsylvania Radiation Oncology Department and Tech-X Corporation, has been awarded NIH SBIR Phase I contract to develop new experimental and computational numerical methods for administering and guiding PDT treatment.

06 '14 Simphotek releases SimphoSOFT® 3.2   Suite+

Starting this version, SimphoSOFT® supports defining the following different types of radial profiles for the incident electro-magnetic field.

New type of snapshot has also been added to the existing set of graphical output: EMF transverse plot which shows 2D color plots of the electro-magnetic field magnitude. New projects templates have been added to model and analyze Tm-doped amplification, to model emission spectrum of Alexa fluorescent probes, STED microscopy.

11 '13 Simphotek releases MPA Info+ 1.0  —  MPA Material Database

Imagine a task of finding an MPA material with the largest known absorption coefficient absorbing light within a desired wavelength range. It can take hours, if not days, to find such a material, and possibly extra days to verify the search.

Simphotek's MPA Info+ is the world's first, comprehensive, searchable database containing detailed photo-physical properties of over 1,000 multi-photon absorber molecules. Its main purpose is to help experimentalists, photo-physics or photo-chemist researchers, and medical investigators to quickly and easily find optimal MPA materials with desired photo-physical characteristics, cross-referenced to the recent publications.
